Underground Barossa

Step beneath the surface to rediscover the Barossa

Over 100 Years of Wine History

Many of the buildings featured along the main street of Tanunda date back to the early European settlement. And at 161 Murray Street, you’ll find a 123 year old stone hewn structure that is more than meets the eye –  if only you take the time to step underground.

Our family operated this historic complex many years ago as Grant Burge – Illaparra. When it became available again early in 2019, we knew immediately we wanted this back in our family. For us. it is important to continue our family’s commitment to promote the Barossa, and we wanted the space to showcase not only Burge family products, but also other outstanding produce from the Barossa Valley region.

Home for our Burge Family Projects

Underground Barossa is not just our family’s winery cellar door, but the home for the Burge family’s projects which includes the much loved bulk fortified wine, Barossa Boy Wines (Trent Burge’s brand launched in 2017) and Amelia Burges’ sparkling launched in 2019.

The tasting room also includes various other family ventures such as Barossa Wool products, which are made in part from some of the families 6000 head of sheep.

Ask our friendly team when visiting the cellar door and we’ll happily tell you all about our Barossa based family projects.

Not Just a Tasting Room

Underground Barossa’s offers an experience where you will be guided through a range of sparkling, white and red wines paired with local cheese, plus an exclusive tasting of the iconic port matched with chocolate from the Barossa Valley Chocolate Company.

Vintage Tours

If you visit us during vintage (usually between February to April each year) you’ll be treated with the beautiful aromas of red wine, fermenting in the original concrete tanks overhead.

Chat with our team when booking and we may be able to offer you a tour of the working winery at the back of Underground Barossa. What a treat that is for any wine lover!

Relax with a coffee or other treats

If you’re after another type of beverage, Underground Barossa is Tanunda’s only spot to grab a coffee from local supplier Barossa Coffee Roasters. Or enjoy a  Scullery Made Tea and locally baked treats.
